Can laser help with ingrown hairs?

Quick answer

If ingrown hairs keep coming back after shaving or waxing, laser hair reduction may be one option to discuss. It reduces unwanted hair growth, which may help some people who repeatedly get ingrowns. It is not a substitute for checking the skin first, especially if there is active inflammation, infection, staining or scarring.

Start with the pattern, not a procedure

Note where ingrowns occur and what you usually do before they appear. Is it shaving, waxing, threading or another routine? Do you also have painful bumps, dark marks or skin that reacts to products? This short history gives a dermatologist more to work with than a photo of one bump alone. Avoid picking at the area; irritated skin can make the next decision harder.

What should the consultation cover?

Ask whether the bumps are actually ingrown hairs, whether another skin condition needs attention, and whether treatment should wait until the skin settles. If laser is recommended, ask what the goal is: less hair growth, fewer recurring ingrowns, or easier grooming. Ask what progress would look like and when the plan will be reviewed. Our laser hair reduction service page explains how to start that conversation. For treatment-day questions, read the existing preparation and aftercare guide.

Clinical note

Not every bump after hair removal is an ingrown hair. A clinician needs to examine persistent, painful or inflamed areas before recommending a cosmetic procedure.

FAQ

Should I treat an inflamed area with laser immediately? Ask for an assessment first. The clinician can advise when it is appropriate to proceed.

Will laser remove every ingrown hair? No individual outcome can be promised. Discuss what change is realistic for your own hair and skin.
